Called male because it had two cannons as appossed to the female which had two machine guns. This machine called a tank because they were classified as water tanks to keep there introduction into the war a secret. First used in the battle of the Somme with limited success, However it would be at the battle of Cambrai in 1917 when 350 went into action showing the the tanks true potential.
